NEDO cooperates with Nissin Electric in India's micro substation project

The New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) is working with Nissin Electric to study demonstration research projects for micro substations.

The initiative aims to achieve power sources with less environmental impact in underdeveloped power grid areas in India.

The project is part of an international demonstration project on subsidies for Japan’s decarbonization and energy transition technologies.

The micro substation is located in the suburbs of Delhi and is owned by Tata Power-Delhi Distribution Co., Ltd. (Tata Power-DDL).

The device will directly convert the additional high voltage (EHV) power of the transmission line into low voltage power, thereby supplying it to the surrounding area.

The goal of the project is to verify the reliability and effectiveness of this type of power supply while establishing technologies to ensure stable power transfer to underdeveloped or non-existent areas of the grid.

Nissin Electric is testing micro substations using its transformer technology to provide low voltage power for high-capacity transmission lines.

The company's advanced transformer technology can obtain a low voltage power supply (240V) directly through a high-capacity voltage voltage transformer (PVTS) through an EHV power supply (such as a transmission line of 66kV or higher) to obtain an effective power supply.

Typical micro substations include protection equipment, switching equipment, lightning drivers and distribution boards next to PVT.

This configuration allows the acquisition of 100 kV of low voltage power per substation.

It can fully supply 50 to 100 households without the need for traditional large-scale distribution of substations.

Advantages of Nissin Electric's micro substation include reduced operating costs due to the elimination of generator refueling and maintenance needs.

These substations require less space and provide considerable environmental benefits compared to traditional setups, reducing Co₂ emissions by 45% compared to diesel generators.

By deploying a micro substation equipped with PVT, stable and cost-effective power can be provided without building large infrastructure.

Nissin Electric intends to expand this technology across India and to other regions facing similar energy challenges.

“Nedo and Nissin Electric’s collaboration on the micro substation project in India” was originally created and published by the global data-owned brand Power Technology.
