Toyota launches fuel cell trucks for green logistics

Toyota Motor Europe has taken a step forward in the introduction of fuel cell trucks in partnership with VDL Groep.

The plan marks the transition from heavy logistics vehicles to zero tailpipe emissions.

After the initial demonstration tool, the partnership has already deployed four additional fuel cell trucks.

These trucks are now running on major logistics routes in Belgium, France, Germany and the Netherlands.

Toyota is working with logistics providers VOS Transportation Group, Ceva Logistics, Groupe Cat and Yusen Logistics to integrate these zero-emission vehicles into the daily operations of Toyota Parts Center Center Europe.

Toyota Parts Center Europe is a hub of activity, processing over 500,000 parts and accessories per day. The performance of the 40-ton fuel cell truck will be closely monitored here.

The trucks offer comparable performance to diesel engines, but do not generate tailpipe emissions, the company said.

They are powered by electricity produced by hydrogen and oxygen, and in the real world, a single refueling range is as high as 400 kilometers.

In addition to environmental benefits, fuel cell trucks provide smoother riding with vibration-free motors, which enhance comfort and reduce community disruption.

Toyota Motor Europe R&D vice president Thiebault Paquet said: “This initiative is in line with Toyota's goal to reach carbon neutrality in its logistics operations by 2040, but it also aims to contribute to growing the hydrogen economy. Heavy-duty fuel cell trucks can boost the demand for hydrogen, which is one of the key contributors along with the implementation of the EU's Alternative Fuel Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR).

“Together with our logistics providers, we aim to gather learning from the daily operations of our first hydrogen-driven logistics fleet and further improve the vehicle and operational processes.”

Additionally, this month, FAW Toyota launched a new BZ5 battery-powered SUV in China.

This move is part of Toyota's strategy to expand its business in China's rapidly growing new energy vehicle market, providing consumers with a competitive price option.
