According to Unifor union, Canada DHL Express Canada and the eye-catching workers have reached a tentative agreement for the new contract.

Unifor represents over 2,100 DHL Express trucks and van drivers, warehouse pickers and paperworkers in Canada. It said that the members’ approval meeting will be held in the next few days.

Spokeswoman Jenny Yu said Unifor will maintain the pickets until the deal is approved.

DHL Express Canada locked down workers on June 8 and the union immediately took a strike action. DHL Express is able to operate for about 10 days by using alternative workers, but was forced to suspend operations when new legislation prohibiting use of strikers came into effect on June 20. The company has not succeeded in getting the Canadian government to provide exemptions for the continued use of replacement workers.

Unifor is seeking an hourly wage increase of 22% and a 42% increase in cost of living over three years.

DHL Express said it offers 15% of its salary in five years, premiums and pension benefits increased in certain job classifications. It also attempts to modify the compensation formula for independent drivers to be based on market conditions.

DHL Express is not one of the top five couriers in Canada, but is an important transportation option for many businesses, especially for international delivery. Resuming operations will also improve parcel capabilities when the largest delivery company, Canada Post locks up bargaining with mail operators who refuse to work overtime.
