Video shows airborne shark hit surfers in the face in Florida

A man surfing in Florida was hit in the face by a spinning shark – the camera grabbed the camera.

Surfer Darren Kaye said he was in Waters, New Smyrna Beach, Florida, when a spinner shark knocked him off the board Friday night. The video shows the shark flying around the water, hitting Kay, and knocking him off the board. Kaye said in an Instagram post that the shark's nose hit his face and its pectoral fin hit his left arm.

Kaye recognizes the animal as a spinning shark. According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the species is known for its spinning leap while hunting its prey. The committee said sharks often jump out of the water. Adult spinning sharks can weigh up to 110 pounds in length.

Kay said the shark “hit him like a truck.” Kaye said in another video describing the event that he and other surfers in the area saw the “creepy” and “doing things” of sharks in the area, but didn’t mind because the species is a common sight.

“Pourism, suddenly, like a crazy rocket ship, directly on my dome,” Kayer said in the video. A surf line camera captured the video of a shark hitting him.

Kay said the encounter was “absolutely crazy” but did not shake him – he surfed 45 minutes later. He then checked the video and sent it to friends and family.

“One other day at the entrance!” he wrote on Instagram.

The new Smyrna Beach is located on the east coast of Florida. The city is about 15 miles south of Daytona Beach. According to its website, the city has 17 miles of coastline and is known for its good surfing conditions.
