Netanyahu nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize. What is the process? – National

US President Donald Trump is nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize again.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told Trump on Monday that he recommended him a prestigious award, handing him a letter saying he sent the Nobel Committee.

Trump has been nominated by people in the United States and politicians abroad, but this is just a small step in the secret process.

Trump's previous nomination

Trump's nominees include a group of U.S. House Republicans and two Norwegian lawmakers. The groups nominated him separately in 2018 to ease nuclear tensions with North Korea. One of the Norwegians once again nominated him for the 2021 award for his efforts in the Middle East, as did Swedish MPs.

Not all nominations are valid: The Norwegian Nobel Committee, which chose the winner, said in 2018 that those who used their stolen identities nominated Trump at least twice.

Nominations can be made by selected persons and organizations, including heads of state or politicians at the national level, university professors, directors of the Institute of Foreign Policy, past Nobel Prize winners, and members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee itself.

Once all nominations are presented, the committee (constituted by the five members appointed by the Norwegian Parliament) screens them and ensures that they are produced by qualified nominees.

The committee has not announced the nomination and Nobel regulations prohibit judges from discussing their deliberations for 50 years. But those who nominate can choose to make public suggestions.

Nominations must be submitted by February 1 each year, meaning the most recent Netanyahu nomination will be the 2026 award. The winners announced each October that the award ceremony will be held on December 10 (the anniversary of Nobel's death).

Prizes for medicine, physics, chemistry, literature and peace were established by the will of Alfred Nobel, a wealthy Swedish industrialist and inventor of explosives. Later, the Economics Prize was established by the Swedish Central Bank and awarded it at the same time.

How to Win a Peace Prize

According to the Nobel's will, the Peace Prize should be awarded “the best or best work of those who hold and promote peace conferences in order to achieve the most or best brotherhood, to abolish or reduce the best of the standing army and to hold and promote peace conferences.”

The Peace Prize Committee is the only committee that regularly rewards achievements achieved in the previous year – the award is the only one in Oslo, Norway. For science-related prizes, scientists often have to wait decades for their recognition from Judge Nobel, who wants to ensure any breakthroughs are made in Stockholm.

Former U.S. President Barack Obama won the Peace Prize in 2009, and his first term was only nine months. There has been fierce criticism in the United States, and many believe that Obama has not been in office for a long enough time to have an impact on Nobel.

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his work done after leaving the White House.
