Prosecutors say doctors who tried to kill his wife on Oahu trails are charged with attempted murder
An anesthesiologist has been charged with second-degree murder for alleged assaulting his wife on a hiking trail in Oahu, his first appearance in court after being arrested earlier this week.
Gerhardt Konig, 46, appeared in the district court in Hawaii on Thursday for a brief prosecutor's affidavit in the case.
Police said Konig was hiking with his wife near Pali Lookout Monday morning when he “trying to push her away from the trail and then hit her on the head multiple times with a rock.” They said two witnesses who saw the attack called 911.
Honolulu Emergency Services Department said Wednesday that after being beaten, a 36-year-old woman had been treated for head and facial injuries and was severely transported to a local emergency room.
CNN has contacted the hospital to find out about the woman's condition.
Prosecutors filed a judicial ruling on the Probable Cause (JDPC) Thursday, which lists evidence against Konig and plans to hold a preliminary hearing on Monday.
The judge set the bail at $5 million.
Konig's lawyers declined CNN's request for comment.
Police said they arrested Konig on Monday near the Pali Expressway seven hours after the attack.
According to the state's professional career licence database, Konig's Hawaii Medical License in September 2022, his Hawaii Medical License performed well as Tuesday night.
Konig was suspended from working at the Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he was hired as an independent contractor, according to a representative from Maui Health.
“We have been aware of the allegations against Gerhardt Konig, MD. Dr. Konig's medical staff privilege at the Maui Memorial Medical Center has been suspended.
A representative from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center confirmed that Konig had worked here before, but said he had worked with UPMC for more than two years.
