Ukraine says it captures 2 Chinese soldiers fighting Russia in Donetsk region

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Tuesday that the Ukrainian military had captured two Chinese soldiers to fight against Russian troops in the eastern Donetsk region.

Zelenskyy said the clash with Chinese soldiers occurred near the villages of Tarasifka and Bilokholifka in the Donetsk region, where six Chinese military personnel were engaged to the Ukrainian army.

Zelenskyy noted that formerly captured North Korean soldiers were fighting in Russia's Kursk border area where Ukrainian troops occupied the territory, while the Chinese were caught on Ukrainian soil.

Zelenskyy said Ukraine’s information showed that during more than three years of war, the Chinese fought with the Russians and released a video of one of the people captured by Ukraine in X. Ukraine planned to “connect with Beijing immediately and learn how China will respond”.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said on X that the captives “questioned China’s announcement of stance on peace has undermined Beijing’s credibility as a responsible permanent member of the UN Security Council.”

China has provided strong diplomatic support to Russia since its full-scale invasion of its neighbors in February 2022, which has been widely criticized in the West. Beijing has also contributed its economic lifeline through trade in energy and consumer goods.

However, unlike Iran and North Korea, China does not provide Russia with weapons or military expertise, which even provides troops, according to U.S. and South Korean officials.

Russia allows foreigners to join the army like Ukraine. Moscow provides a salary that serves Russia attractive.

Meanwhile, Guyevo's settlement said on Tuesday that Russia will almost regain control of its western Kursk region after pushing Ukrainian troops from its last foothold to its last foothold under Guyevo's settlement.

Russia has been trying to eject Ukrainian troops from Kursk since August last year, after the unexpected invasion of Kiev's troops embarrassed President Vladimir Putin, who Zelenskyy hopes will give him a bargaining chip in any future negotiations.

Ukraine did not immediately comment on this development.

Russia effectively rejected a U.S. proposal to stop work immediately in combat, and it is believed that both sides are ready for a spring and summer movement, which is more likely to occur on the battlefield than in the tough winter months.

Ukraine is in a “good defensive position” and has caused a large number of Russian casualties in recent weeks, General Christopher Cavoli, the commander of the U.S., said Tuesday.

Kavoli testified at a hearing on the U.S. House Armed Services Committee: “I don’t see the Ukrainians looming.
