U.S. Embassy issues sexual assault warning in Bahamas for women renting motorboats in Nassau

The U.S. Embassy issued a sexual assault warning to women renting motorboats in Nassau at the Bahamas Embassy in the Bahamas on Wednesday.
According to an alert posted on the embassy website, Nassau motorboat operators allegedly raped and sexually assaulted multiple American women.
The attacks included two American women in a rape case held last month. Last year, three cases of rape related to jet ski rentals were reported in total.
The embassy said sexual assaults against women also occurred in incidents related to motorboats.

“Female victims reported that male motorboat operators picked them up from downtown Nassau and Paradise Island beaches. This included areas from Yankeno Beach to Sanders Beach and Cabbage Beach,” the U.S. Embassy said. “The victims said they were raped and attacked on an isolated island near New Providence.”
Since August last year, four Americans have been “injured by a motorboat accident, and “two” have “needed to evacuate to the United States urgently due to injuries.”

“U.S. government employees working in the Bahamas are prohibited from using motorboats in New Providence and the Paradise Islands due to security risks,” the embassy said.
Embassy officials also recommend avoiding motorboat rentals in the Bahamas, be aware of the surroundings, stay alert near public restrooms and Nassau Beach, and follow local weather and marine alerts.
