Germany's SPD approves alliance agreement, new government paves the way
Sources told the DPA on Wednesday that the German Social Democratic Party (SPD) has approved a coalition agreement with Friedrich Merz's Conservative group in a member vote, paving the way for the new German government to take office next week.
Party insiders said 84.6% of members voted in two weeks for the deal and ended on Tuesday.
Center SPD will join the Christian Democratic League, which hosts Chief Melz and its sister party, the Christian Social Alliance, as the incoming government's junior party – both of which have cut the alliance agreement.
Merz will be elected Prime Minister on May 6 at a meeting of the German House of Commons, two months since his center-right wins the federal election in February.
