Discounts for German electric vehicles (EVS) rose in April, with an average price cut of 16.7%, an increase of 1.8 percentage points from March discounts compared to March, according to leading expert Ferdinand Dudenhöffer.

Dudenhöffer said EV discounts have increased by 3 percentage points since January, equivalent to savings of more than 1,000 euros for typical models. He analyzed the online prices of 20 of Germany's most popular all-electric vehicles.

“In April, the threshold for offering higher discounts on electric vehicles has dropped,” Dudenhofer said.

Automakers are under pressure to sell more electric vehicles to meet EU CO2 targets, and some brands have recently changed their distribution systems, thus stimulating the new use of dealer incentives and promotions to stimulate weak demand.

Dudenhöffer said that since January, discounts for internal combustion engine vehicles and plug-in hybrids have been slightly lower than EV incentives.

As a result, the price gap between electric vehicles and conventional vehicles has narrowed to its lowest level since Germany terminated state-sponsored subsidies.

Dudenhof said Germany's electric vehicle sector could now be on the verge of “new appreciation driven by more attractive prices.”

After government subsidies expired, new registrations for electric vehicles in the first quarter rebounded in the first quarter after falling in early 2024.
