Channel 5 reports that Meteorologist Mark Johnson at the station “no longer hires”

On the afternoon of May 9, Channel 5 reported that longtime Cleveland meteorologist Mark Johnson was “no longer employed by WEWS.”

“News 5 wants to share with our audiences that change our live streamers,” the station wrote in a news post on its website. “Meteorologist Mark Johnson is no longer employed by WEWS.”

The short news story does not include separation or essential reasons, but includes a statement from WEWS Vice President and General Manager Steve Weinstein:

“We want our audiences to know News 5 and its parent company Scripts, which is very serious about protecting the trust of our audience by requiring our employees to comply with the highest ethical standards. We cannot provide more details because it is a personnel issue.”

The story says the station “is still unwavering in its commitment to becoming a weather team for safety and accuracy.”

The station will search for Johnson's replacement immediately.

According to the page on the radio website, Johnson joined Channel 5 in November 1993.

“Mark is an award-winning meteorologist who has won the coveted Emmy Award for his weather forecast,” the page reads. “He is the first Cleveland forecaster recognized by the American Meteorological Society (AMS) and the National Weather Association (NWA).

Johnson hasn't spoken out yet. His only social media post on May 9 was on Facebook, where he posted a photo of lightning. Dozens of people commented on the post and wish him all the best.
