Mexico sues Google for changing the “Gulf of Mexico” to “Gulf of America” after Trump's order

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced Friday that Mexico filed a lawsuit against Mexico after changing its Gulf label to the U.S. Gulf label on its map platform to match the executive order of U.S. President Donald Trump to modify the name of the water corpse.
Sheinbaum said at a press conference that the lawsuit was filed against the tech giant and provided no additional details.
Sheinbaum filed a lawsuit after threatening to sue Google for its name change in February.

“We're going to wait. From a legal advice standpoint, we've seen what that will mean, but we hope they can make the revisions.”
Mexico's Foreign Relations Department has also sent letters to Google urging it not to re-screen the Ocean Basin as the U.S. Gulf.

Mexico believes that the U.S. Gulf label should only apply to parts on the mainland U.S. shelves. According to the database of international borders, the United States controls about 46% of the Gulf, Mexico controls about 49%, and Cuba controls about 5%.
“What Google does here is to change the name of the continental shelf in Mexico and Cuba, which has nothing to do with Trump's statute, which only applies to the US continental shelf,” Sheinbaum said in February.
The Gulf appears in Google Maps and is the Gulf of the United States within the United States, the Gulf of Mexico within Mexico and elsewhere in the Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of the United States). It has been known as the Gulf of Mexico for more than 400 years.

Google Maps began using the U.S. Gulf for U.S. users shortly after Trump’s order, and its “long-term practice” was to follow the U.S. government’s leadership on these issues. If the official names differ between countries, Google's policy says users will see their official local name.
In February, the Mexican president shared a response from Cris Turner, Google's vice president of government affairs and public policy, who said the company would not change its policies after Trump's order.
The news of Sheinbaum's lawsuit comes after House Republicans passed the U.S. Bay Act by 211-206 vote, which was the first step in codifying Trump's order. The legislation will now go to the Senate.
