Tiktok beauty influencer shoots dead in Mexico live broadcast

Valeria Marquez spoke to her tiktok followers during her live stream in her beauty salon in Zapopan, Mexico when someone arrived at her door to deliver a small package.

“He's a little pig!” the 23-year-old beauty influencer screamed as she returned to the audience and unbuttoned the stuffed animal, smiling as she threw her long blonde hair over her shoulders.

A moment later, she died, and even in life, the live table was still on the table in front of her, stained with blood. The shot ends only when another person picks up his phone, and their faces are temporarily displayed to the audience.

According to the Jalisco Attorney General's Office, Max was shot and killed by a male intruder in a case because it was investigating a suspicious woman – a woman or girl killed a woman or girl for gender-based reasons.

Marquez's death is a public figure with more than 100,000 Instagram followers who have created shock waves through a country that has long struggled with high levels of homicide and violence against women.

Just a few days ago, another woman – a mayoral candidate in Villacruz – was also shot during a live broadcast, and three others were shot.

While not all homicides involving women are women, many are. According to Amnesty International, in 2020, a quarter of Mexico's killings were investigated for women, with cases in each of Mexico's 32 states.

According to the Mexican government, 847 cases of females were reported nationwide last year, with 162 in the first three months of the year.

According to rights groups, Mexico is eager for the homicide response, and the investigation they say rarely leads to prosecution.

“In 2022, about 4,000 women were killed in Mexico, accounting for 12% of all homicides that year,” Human Rights Watch director Juanita Goebertus told CNN. “The case rate leading to a verdict is about 67%.

Gobertus said the main challenge is to increase the authorities' ability to investigate and protect witnesses and victims.

CNN has contacted the Attorney General's Office for more information.

CNN's Ivonne Valdés, Veronica Calderon and Angelica Franganillo Diaz contributed to the report.
