Officials revealed what caused a large ship to crash into the Brooklyn Bridge over the weekend.

In a press conference after the incident, New York City Mayor Eric Adams said that the training ship Cuauhtémoc, used for the Mexican Navy, fell into the landmark due to mechanical misfortune.

“The pilot lost the power of the ship,” he said of the ship, taking off from nearby Pier 17 not long ago. Wilson Aramboles, chief of the New York Police Department's (NYPD) Special Operations Division, said the ship was on its way to Iceland.

Ydanis Rodriguez, a New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) commissioner, also said at a press conference that the head of the bridge department was in Brooklyn, had initial assessments that there were no signs of significant damage.

Adams added that 277 people were on board during the crash, 19 of whom were injured and four were taken seriously. According to officials, no one fell into the water.

Before 9 p.m. on May 17, the Cuauhtémac ship crashed into the Brooklyn Bridge, prompting search and retreat operations.

The Mexican Navy confirmed the incident in a statement on X shortly afterwards: “During the sailing operation of the Cuauhtémoc sailboat in New York, the Brooklyn Bridge suffered damage to the training ship and prevented the continuation of training time.”

“The naval and local authorities that are providing support are reviewing the status of personnel and equipment,” the organization added. “The Navy reaffirms its commitment to personnel safety, transparency and provides excellent training for future officers of the Mexican Navy.”

Eyewitness videos of the crash shared on social media showed the ship's large mast colliding with bridges and onlookers, which was surprising. The upper half of the ship splits upon impact. After the collision, people standing along the mast can be seen hanging from the broken structure.

According to NBC New York, Cuauhtémoc arrived in New York City earlier this week, docked at Pier 17 at South Street Seaport Museum and opened on weekends.

The ship was built in 1981 according to the museum's website at the Celaya shipyard in Bibarba, Spain.
