Rory McIlroy completed his professional grand slam last month. The defending Masters champion recently arrived in Charlotte for the second largest season of the 2025 season, the PGA Championship.

McIlroy ended the game with a three-point draw, finishing 47th and ended the Major with a three-pointer. Sunday was the final day of the tournament and also marked McIlroy's fourth straight day of refusing to talk to the media gathered at the Charlotte Quail Hollow Club.

It is speculated that Northern Ireland avoids traveling to the races in view of the situation and avoids making any public statements to the press. The American Golf Association (USGA) ruled that McIlroy's driver was unqualified. The ruling forced McIlroy to make a switch.

McIlroy's name is related to a name that fails to pass the test and ends up becoming public knowledge, possibly due to a leak. USGA strategy prevents organizations from disclosing the names of any player receiving failed tests.

Scottie Scheffler wins first professional PGA championship

McIlroy ended up being just one of several competitors forced to perform equipment replacements for the PGA Championship.

Xander Schauffele, who won last year's PGA title, hints that Scottie Scheffler must make changes, too.

“I think Scott is winning the game, and I think he's turned to his backup, too, too,” Schauffele told GolfWeek. “Look, you don't even know because he's so good. We can handle it because (the device) represents is so good now.”

Scheffler and McIlroy are recognized by Taylormade. As of Sunday night, the brand has not issued a public statement about golfer drivers.

Testing each competitor’s club helps “protect the integrity of the field,” Schauffele said.

“I think they should test everyone's drivers,” he said. “It's not right to test only 50 people. If you're for (the spirit of the game), it doesn't make sense. The point is to protect the integrity of the field. If you don't test everyone comprehensively, I don't think you're protecting the entire field.”

Amid the controversy, the US PGA issued a statement.

The statement read in part: “We can confirm that USGA is invited to conduct club tests at the PGA Championships as required by the USGA.” “The testing program is consistent with the level of support USGA provides for PGA Tour and other championships, which is part of its regular driver testing program. The standard process is about one-third of the area under the program. This week in the case of Quail Hallow, this is the case of Quail Hal. In the case of Quail Hallow, it is a certain driver, it is a certain time, it is a certain time, it is a certain time, it is a certain time, it is a certain time, it is a certain time.”

Scheffler won the PGA title on Sunday, earning his third major victory in his career.
