2 Mexican mayors shot to death in wild attack – Country

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Tuesday that two top aides to Mexico's Mayor Clara Brugada were shot dead in an attack in the central part of the capital.

Sheinbaum confirmed that the mayor's personal secretary Ximena Guzmán, Brugada's adviser José Muñoz was shot dead at a crossroads in the borough of Benito Juarez in Mexico City, and Sheinbaum clearly stated in a statement at a daily press conference that it was obvious that it was frustrating.

She read: “There will not be impunity, those responsible will be detained and must face justice.”

Brugada also issued the statement to X, but did not share whether she was the intended target.

Authorities said the shooter was conducted on a motorcycle by the gunman at about 7:30 a.m. local time and they are now reviewing the surveillance camera footage to identify the attacker and determine the motivation.

Mexican security analyst David Saucedo told the Associated Press that the killings had the mark of organized crime, which he believed was intended to put pressure on the Brugada government. He questioned why there are no safety details for people as important as Guzmán to Brugada.

Brugada is Mexico's second largest political player, behind Sheinbaum, who won the Mexican city mayor last year. Sheinbaum and Brugada are strong allies, both working in the Morena Party in the county.

“We have been united and supported the families of these two people for a long time. We have known them. We are united with our family and Clara,” Sheinbaum said in a press conference on Tuesday.

In the past, the Mexican city government has been attacked.

In 2020, then-Mexican City Police Chief Omar García Harfuch, now the federal security minister, was shot and injured, killing two of his bodyguards. The attack was blamed on one of the country's most powerful drug gangs, the Jalisco new generation cartel.
