New York City workers were killed and injured 2 people in explosion of raw sewage boat on the Hudson River

New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) workers died, and two others were injured after the Hudson River exploded on Saturday.

After 10:30 a.m., the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) received a report of an explosion on a city-owned ship, Hunts Point.

When crews arrived, they found a large explosion in one of the tank’s storages, said David Simms, deputy assistant director of FDNY.

Sims said the ship was used to transport raw sewage from New York City to sewage treatment plants.

The New York Police Department was responding to the ship's explosion on Saturday, killing a New York City Department of Environmental Protection employee and injuring two other people.

Officials said that despite two employees surviving, the third employee died after being “destroyed by a force explosion between the dock and the ship itself.”

FDNY tried to use “technical explanation” to free employees, but the employees died.

The DEP confirmed that the deceased employee was working on the ship, which was docked at the Beihe Wastewater Recovery Facility in Xiharin.

An injured employee was taken to the hospital. Officials said another employee refused medical treatment.

The status of the hospitalized staff is not yet known.

Due to the nature of the explosion, there was original sewage on the deck on the ship and all the FDNY personnel who reacted were purified.

“In this incident, we used a full-hand mission, which was three engines, two ladder companies and a chief,” Sims said. “We had four units, from the Marines, a Dangerous Goods Battalion and a Safety Battalion.”

Officials would not say whether the explosion was an accident, noting that the cause is under investigation by the Fire Department.

Aggarvara continued: “He is a key member of the Wastewater Treatment Bureau and his decades of service reflect his commitment to the DEP mission.”
