Air India flight to London crash in northwest India

The airline and local media reported that an Air India passenger plane crashed in the northwestern Indian city of Ahmedabad on Thursday. Visual effects on local TV channels show smoke rolling in the crash site near Ahmedabad Airport.

Civil Aviation Administration Director Faiz Ahmed Kidwai told the Associated Press that Air India AI 171 (Boeing 787) hit a residential area called Meghani Nagar five minutes after flying to 1:38 pm local time.

The flight was bound to London's Gatwick Airport. Kidwai said the airport had 232 passengers and 12 crew members and the emergency team had been activated at the airport.

The 787 Dreamliner is a wide twin-engine aircraft. This is the first crash of the Boeing 787 aircraft, according to the Aviation Safety Network database.
