What do medical practices hope to gain from revenue cycle management technology?

Adopting and implementing new technologies is a major undertaking for medical practices and hospitals. But a research report sponsored by Smarter Technologies reveals not only implementation challenges but also practical preferences for maximizing the effectiveness of new health technologies, especially artificial intelligence. this AI Index in RCM Report will be the focus of an upcoming webinar January 22 at 1 p.m. ET.

MedCity News surveyed 125 medical billing executives and support staff, including CEOs and medical billing managers, for the report. They represent organizations of all sizes, from facilities with 5,000 or fewer discharges per year to hospitals with more than 10,000 discharges per year. The report also highlights the challenges and needs of both small and large practices.

Interestingly, the top priorities for AI applications in revenue cycle management differed based on the size of the respondent’s healthcare organization.

For facilities with 5,000 or fewer discharges per year, bill collection emerged as a top priority, favored by 52% of respondents in this category.

Among practices with 5,000 to 10,000 discharges per year, 48% of respondents favored payer communications.

Patient financial services was a top priority for the largest practices with more than 10,000 annual discharges, reflecting 71% of respondents' preference for this category.

Automation drives 49% of software purchases at medium-sized hospitals.

The report also emphasizes:

  • Insights from working with AI software vendors
  • Automated tasks that can improve workflow
