Apartment where director of Northern Canada hospital died in Israel strike

The director of one of the largest hospitals in Northern Gaza was killed in an Israeli apartment strike with his wife, daughter and sister, medical officials said Wednesday.

Dr. Marwan Sultan is the director of the Indonesian hospital, the largest medical institution north of Gaza, and civilians in the region have been crucial since the war began in the territory for nearly 21 months.

Diaa al-Najjar, the Sultan's nephew, said that even for a moment, his uncle never stopped working in the war.

“He kept resisting. Until the last second, the last moment,” Al-Najjar said in the CBC News in Gaza. “May God give us patience and may God mercy on our martyrs.”

Issam Nabhan, head of the nursing department of the Indonesian hospital, said the body molecules of Sudan and his family arrived at Shiite hospitals.

“Gaza lost a great man and doctor,” Nabang said. “He has never left the hospital since the war began and urged us to stay and provide humanitarian assistance. We don't know what he is going to do to be killed.”

1,500 health care workers have been killed since 2023

The hospital was surrounded by Israeli forces in May and evacuated along with two other primary school hospitals in northern Gaza when it targeted Hamas infrastructure after Israeli forces renewed its offensive in the region.

Only 20 of Gaza's 36 hospitals were partly played in May, while others were forced to close due to damage caused by the Israeli strike.

Médecins Sansantières (MSF) and other aid groups accuse Israel of targeting hospitals and condemn the attacks and arrests of medical personnel.

Munir Al-Barash, general director of the Gaza Ministry of Health, said the killing of Sudan is a long list of the latest deaths targeting health workers in the Gaza Strip.

“Dr. Mawan Sultan is not here [Israeli army] Siege in Indonesian hospitals… He insisted on continuing the operation and did not stop. “On the Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza on Wednesday, CBC Press Freedom photographer Mohamed El Saife told CBC Press Freedom photographer Mohamed El Saife.

The ministry also said the death toll in Gaza reached 57,000 on Wednesday after hospitals received 142 bodies overnight.

The Ministry of Health said that since dawn on Wednesday, 40 people have been killed in the Gaza Strip. Hospital officials said at least four children and seven women were among them.

The Israeli military said it was investigating the report.

The war began on October 7, 2023, when militants led by Hamas attacked southern Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking about 250 hostages.

The war has put Palestinian coastal territory in ruins and most of the cityscapes have flattened during the battle. More than 90% of Gaza's 2.3 million people are displaced and are often displaced multiple times. It triggered a humanitarian crisis in Gaza, pushing thousands of people to hunger.

Hamas reviews ace-backed ceasefire plan

Hamas said the latest death in Gaza was emerging when it was studying what U.S. President Donald Trump called Gaza’s “final” ceasefire proposal.

Trump said on Tuesday that Israel agreed to the conditions required to end a 60-day ceasefire with Hamas after what he called a “long and productive” meeting between representatives and Israeli officials.

Hamas said in a statement that it is studying the new ceasefire proposals received from mediators Egypt and Qatar, but stressed that its purpose is to reach an agreement to ensure the end of the war and withdraw from Israel from Gaza.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called for the removal of Hamas from its first public remarks since Trump's announcement.

Netanyahu told a meeting chaired by the trans-Israel pipeline: “There will not be Hamas.
