Revere's mission began late at night on April 18, 1775, when there were two lanterns in Boston's North North Church, indicating that the British were crossing the Charles River at sea.

Revere rode a horse to the countryside to remind the colonial militia and warn patriot leaders Samuel Adams and John Hancock in Lexington. Although he was stopped by the British Patrol before arriving at Concord, his message had been passed on by riders William Dawes and Dr. Samuel Prescott.

Thanks to their warning, the militia troops were ready for the first shot shot on Lexington Green the next morning.

The president's statement highlights these facts while paying tribute to Revere, the “master craftsman, husband, father and free proud son.”

It also quotes Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's famous 1860 poem Paul Revere's Ride, which turned the midnight trip into a national legend. Although the actual riding is part of a larger effort involving multiple messengers, Longfellow's verse “disdain, not fear” – helping enshrine Revere's name in American memory, remains to this day.
