Brazilian courts allow gender-neutral designation in documents for the first time

São Paulo (AP) – The High Court in Brazil on Wednesday allowed a person to determine gender neutrality in official documents, an unprecedented decision that can still be reviewed.
The ruling was a case of a person seeking gender-neutral in its birth certificate by a panel of the capital Brasilia High Court.
The authorization applies to people who initially requested to be described as male after hormone therapy, but later regretted and appealed to the court.
The High Court said in a statement that the case has been sealed.
Nancy Andrighi, one of the judges of the panel and case rapporteur, described the issue as dramatic in her ruling.
“This person has to suffer a lot of pain. To get surgery, to get hormones, to be something she thinks is good for her, and then realize that it is not the case,” Andrigi wrote. All four other judges in the panel agreed.
