California death row prisoners killed in allegedly attacked by more than 30 compatriots

California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) officials are investigating after they died Friday in Kern Valley State Prison in Delano.
Mario Renteria, 36, allegedly defeated prisoner Julian Mendez at 10:30 a.m. Friday, prompting prison staff to respond.
According to a CDCR press release obtained by Fox News Digital, officers ordered them to get out of the car, but the men failed to comply.
Chemical agents initially stopped the attack, but more than 30 other prisoners rushed Renteria and began attacking him.

According to the CDCR, the order to stop was ignored and staff used multiple explosive grenades to calm the violence.
Mendes suffered multiple wounds and immediately took measures to save lives. He was taken to the jail classification and treatment area, and the doctor declared him dead at 11:05 a.m.

Officials said that although the type of weapons is not yet known, improvised weapons were found on the scene.
According to CDCR, Renteria is still restricted in housing.
Officials have limited population movement to facilitate investigations by the Prison Investigation Services and Kern County District Attorney’s Office.
Notified the Inspector General's Office that the Kern County coroner will determine the official cause of Mendes' death.

According to CDCR data, Mendes received it from Riverside County on December 2, 2004. He was sentenced in 2002 for the first-degree murder of two teenagers.
Received from Riverside County on April 27, 2022, Renteria was sentenced to life imprisonment, with the possibility of parole first-degree murder (third crime) and arson case.

The Kern Valley State Prison opened in 2005, with over 3,100 homes for minimum and high-security inmates.
