Columbia University President Resigns – The New York Times

Katrina Armstrong, interim president of Columbia University, resigned Friday as the university accepts a request from the Trump administration a week later.

The university immediately appointed its board co-chairman Claire Shipman as acting president.

The Trump administration moved to about $400 million in grants and contracts to Columbia this month, a huge blow to a university that received one-fifth of its annual operating revenue from the federal government.

Last week, to restore funding flows, Colombia agreed to a range of conditions under the Trump administration, including a stricter policy of protest, the establishment of campus security forces and new oversight of the university’s Middle East, South Asia and Africa Research Department.

Colombia's decision was widely condemned as surrender.

Nemat Shafik has been widely criticized for handling campus protests and allegations of anti-Semitism, and Dr. Armstrong was appointed interim president of Colombia in August. Columbia said Dr. Armstrong will return to the head of the University Medical Center.

This is a developing story that will be updated.
