Dodgers announce plans to assist immigrant communities in Los Angeles

The Dodgers will announce their plans Thursday to assist immigrant communities that have recently impacted in Los Angeles, according to a team spokesman.

The news will mark the first public comment from the Dodgers about the city's latest turmoil since federal immigration agents began raids across the South about two weeks ago.

The Dodgers initially refused to make any comments public when the Raiders first started. But their silence has been split among part of the fan base, with calls on social media increasing from recent days to address what’s going on around the city.

Manager Dave Roberts was asked about this last week and said: “I just hope we are now positively distracted by what people in Los Angeles are going through.”

Smith-born Kiké Hernández also spoke on social media on Saturday, writing: “I cannot stand the violation, dissecting, abuse and tearing of our communities. All should be treated with respect, dignity and human rights.”

The Dodgers were caught up in a related controversy last weekend when singer and social media figure Nezza sang a Spanish version of the national anthem at Dodger Stadium, protesting against the immigration raid despite requests from team employees to sing in English.

So far, the only other local professional sports teams after the raid were football clubs LAFC and Angel City FC, both acknowledging “fear and uncertainty” throughout the Los Angeles community.

The full breadth of the Dodgers’ plan is unclear. However, their silence on the situation will be broken soon.
