In 2023, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and a few months later she was diagnosed with skin cancer.

“When I was first diagnosed with cancer, I was only 63 years old and cancer of any age is traumatic,” she told The Outlet.

“But, as adults, we have mature and life experiences that can help us advocate for ourselves and meet challenges. We can seek help if needed and, most importantly, our voices are often more serious.”

Ferguson is “Fergie”, a teenager who advocates fighting cancer. She has been a patron of the organization for 35 years.

Her daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, followed in their mother's footsteps to increase cancer awareness among young people.

“I think that people who make health plans and policies always ignore a group of teenagers and young people,” Ferguson wrote in another article in the Times.

Ferguson shares how young people with cancer face their own challenges, including receiving treatments that are not tailored to age.

“While the difficulty of accessing trials affects patients of all ages, young people are in a unique vulnerable population. This is because they are more likely to experience rare cancers, or are too old to participate in pediatric trials, which are too small for adult trials. We must provide solutions to these challenges and save more lives,” she wrote in support of adolescent cancer trust.

“The third area is access to mental health support. A trust survey of psychologists found that 87% believe that the national regulations do not meet the needs of adolescents and young people with the disease. It is our responsibility to help amplify the voice and make sure they are not overlooked.”
