Visit to Greenland Grand Slam's 'Highly Proactive' Program, Trump Adviser Usha Vance – National

Second Lady Usha Vance plans to travel to Greenland amid repeated proposals by U.S. President Donald Trump that his administration should manage the field of autonomy.

But the upcoming visit has not been well conducted with some local officials after Trump repeatedly threatened to annex autonomous territory.

Vance will return Thursday and Saturday, according to the Associated Press.

Her office said one of her three children would accompany her as part of the U.S. delegation that will “visit historic sites” and “learn about Greenland-style heritage.”

The cohort will also include Trump's national security adviser Mike Waltz.

Greenland Prime Minister Múte Bourup Egge told Sermitsiaq on Sunday that Vance's upcoming visit was “very radical” and added that the U.S. pressure on Greenland society had reached a critical level.

“It is not helpful to stand together in Greenland, to speak out, and diplomatic attempts to dialogue are futile. Now, the international community must respond.”

His comments come when Trump pursues momentum on the island.

In a conversation with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte in the Oval Office earlier this month, the president said he wanted to obtain Greenland for international security.

Since the 1300s, the island has been owned by Denmark in various identities and is an autonomous territory with jurisdiction over its Ministry of Interior.

However, its foreign policy and defense strategy are supervised by the Danish authorities.

Denmark is a long-time ally of the United States and a founding member of NATO, a military alliance that Trump threatens to withdraw from multiple times.

Greenland is also the largest island in the world and the location of the US military base.

Bourup Egede also questioned the purpose of Vance and Waltz's visit, saying it could only be interpreted as a “demonstration of power.”

“We are now at a level where we will never be harmlessly visited by the politician's wife, and that's a prospect. Because what has the security consultant done in Greenland? The only purpose is to show us power and the signal will not be misunderstood.”

Jens-Frederik Nielsen, touted as Greenland's next prime minister, told the same publication that the visit demonstrated a “lack of respect” for Greenlanders and their democratic processes after the upcoming elections.

“If we allow ourselves to be affected by it, for example, by rushing to form a new alliance, we may become more vulnerable to stress,” he said.

He concluded: “So let us calm down and keep our common goal of showing the outside world that our country is not a commodity, and that we have sovereignty over the country, which must be respected and no one can take it away from us.”
