Gaza sees new aid process after U.S.-backed groups take over operations – National

According to a U.S.-backed group, the new aid system in Gaza opened its first distribution hub on Monday, the group began providing food to Palestinians who face growing hunger after Israel’s nearly three-month lockdown of Hamas.

Despite the UN’s opposition, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation is still taking over the aid. The desperately needed materials began to flow, and the day saw Israel strike killing at least 52 people in Gaza.

The group said the food on the truck (not saying much) had been shipped to the hub and distributed to Palestinians. It is not clear at the location of the hub or how to choose to receive supplies.

“More aid trucks will be provided tomorrow, with the daily flow of aid increasing,” the foundation said in a statement.

The United Nations and aid groups have resisted the new system supported by Israel and the United States. They asserted that Israel was trying to use food as a weapon and said the new system would not work.

The foundation begins operations the day after the executive director resigns. American Jake Wood said it was obvious that the foundation did not allow independent operation. It is unclear who is funding the group, which said it has appointed interim leader John Acree to replace Wood,

The organization is composed of former humanitarian, government and military officials. It said its distribution points will be protected by private security companies and by the end of this week, aid will reach one million Palestinians (about half of Gaza’s population).

Under pressure from allies, Israel began allowing humanitarian aid to enter Gaza last week after it blocked all food, medicines, fuel or other commodities since early March. Aid groups warned of the famine and said the aid coming in was far from enough to meet the growing demand.
