German Chancellor Merz attends Pope Leo's inauguration
Government spokesman Stefan Kornelius said on Monday that Germany's newly formed prime minister Friedrich Merz will be inaugurated Pope Rio XIV in Rome on Monday.
Melz also plans to meet with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on the sidelines of the visit, his first meeting with Italian leaders since taking office last week.
“The desire of both parties is to make such a date very fast,” Coenlius said.
The spokesman said that Meles and Meloni have known each other for a long time and have a good relationship.
Leo XIV became the first American citizen to be elected as Pope on Thursday. The inauguration ceremony at St. Peter's Square is expected to attract leaders from all over the world, including U.S. Vice President JD Vance.
Vance last visited Rome in April when he became the last politician to meet with Pope Francis before his death on April 21.
