German presidential balance Israel supports Gaza relief

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier expressed hope that an “incredible story of reconciliation” between Israel and Germany could serve as a “glades of hope” in a quieter period.

Steinmeier, speaking in Berlin with Israeli President Isaac Herzog, who marked 60 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries, said: “Our own history should also bring hope to others, especially in these times.”

“It's possible, it's possible.”

“And I'm very aware that the point of view is just hopeful,” Steinmeer added.

Speaking at Herzog, he said: “Your country is invaded by Hamas. Your country cannot rest in peace in the face of the threat from terrorists to Israel and must defend Islamic terrorism, hostage prisoners and kidnappings.”

But he also talked about the dilemma of the Gazas and pointed out the “huge” destruction and “growth” of civilians in the sealed coastal zone.

Steinmeer said he had asked Herzog to advocate for an Israeli blockade of humanitarian aid to Gaza.

“Friends of Israel, I don't think of Germany as a special friend,” Steinmeer said. “They recognize the dilemma that Hamas has caused for the Israeli army by hiding behind civilians by cowardly, while continuing to fire rockets at Israel.”

“But I also worry that the suffering that the people of Gaza are experiencing is deepening the rift. It concerns me, like many other Israeli friends.”
