Heavy rains flood the Argentine expressway, causing evacuation

Buenos Aires, Argentina (AP) – After days of heavy rains flooding the highways, farmland and the entire community, more than 2,000 people have been ordered to evacuate rural areas north of the Argentina capital.

A bus with 44 passengers was trapped for more than 10 hours on a road connecting Buenos Aires to the interior.

Officials said that when the average monthly precipitation of about 1.7 inches over the past 72 hours was around 8 to 15 inches (300 to 400 mm). Humidity is expected, followed by strong winds, and authorities are urging residents, especially the 275,000 residents near the city of Zarate along the Parana River, to stay indoors.

Authorities compared the storm to one in March, killing at least 16 people.
