First on Fox: According to HHS officials familiar with the matter, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is retraining more than 450 former employees who belong to the agency’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The rehired workers come from four different operating departments in the CDC. These departments include the National Center for HIV, Viral Hepatitis, Venereal Diseases and Tuberculosis Prevention (NCHHSTP), the National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH), the Direct Office of Directors (IOD), and the CDC Global Health Center (GHC).
In the first few months, the Trump administration made a full-scale effort to reorganize the HHS and its sub-institutions, a move that included layoffs of up to 10,000 jobs in various health agencies. This also follows several actions from the Trump administration, following these layoffs to re-hire some of the HHS employees who initially let go, such as the CDC World Trade Center Health Program (WTCHP), the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), and the National Institutes of Health.

HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. told CBS News in April. “We are restoring them. It's always the plan. At Doge, we've discussed this from the beginning and we're going to do 80% cuts, but 20% of that has to be restored because we're going to make mistakes.”
NCHHSTP will see the largest number of workers rehired from four departments, while 214 are back. The HHS department consists of several smaller groups, including the disease prevention and treatment department, which the Trump administration cut in half.
NCEH will see the next return with the largest number of employees, with 158 returning. Similar to NCHHSTP, NCEH consists of multiple groups, including a group called the Department of Environmental Health Sciences and Practice, which the Trump administration was initially eliminated as part of its reforms.

IOD will see the most 71 returns and the CDC’s global health center will see the least staff returning to four departments and have 24 rehired workers.
HHS is just one of several agencies that have rehired employees after the layoffs stimulated by the Ministry of Government Efficiency (DOGE). According to the Washington Post, the IRS, the Food and Drug Administration, the State Department, the State Department, and the Department of Housing and Urban Development have all taken action to rehire employees who were initially fired for force.
