How to visit (even get married!)
For those familiar with Phuket, Thailand, the first image that usually comes to mind is crystal turquoise, fine white sand beaches, rich cultural attractions, and many great nightlife. However, there is another aspect of Phuket that most tourists don’t know…even some residents.
I'm talking about the Baba wedding celebration in Phuket.
The Baba Wedding Celebration in Phuket is the annual cultural event in May, showing the traditional Peranakan (or Strait Chinese) wedding customs of the island’s unique Chinese Thai heritage. For reference, “baba” is a word from Peranakan (local/indigenous and Chinese-language) cultures from Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia. The two-day festival reenacts a classic Baba wedding ceremony, conducted by Thai and Chinese wedding ceremonies, which include the city’s recent street parade of brides and grooms, dressed in vibrant, sophisticated traditional outfits.

When Thailand’s King Maha Vajiralongkorn signs same-sex marriage this year (2025), it will be a Baba wedding celebration in Phuket and will also be debuting at a festive party and celebrating same-sex couples!
Residents and visitors are centered on the backdrop of the beautifully restored mid-wine architecture, one of the backdrops of the beautifully restored mid-viary architecture, where you can enjoy wedding preparatory classes, as well as cooking demonstrations, traditional performances, tea rituals and historical exhibitions.
You can even…get married!
However, before you start writing your vows, you should probably choose a hotel first! The best hotels in Phuket, especially if you are looking for a beautiful romantic atmosphere, is V Villas Phuket. The premium ratings for this luxurious boutique resort are perfect for budding relationships, suggestions, honeymoons, vow updates and every heartfelt moment in the middle.
First, all accommodation in V Villas includes personal butler services. If that wasn't a microcosm of romantic luxury, I don't know what it was. The resort has a spa specializing in couples packages and a 5-course tasting menu with date-themed. And if the Phuket Baba wedding celebrations do make you want to swap rings, Villas Phuket also has a wedding package that matches the city’s luxury elegance with fireworks, fire dancers and three-piece quartets (they can do something with fire, if needed).
But when Baba’s wedding celebrations are over, the celebration of love will not stop. While it may only last two happy days, Phuket feels love all year round. Couples can indulge in a sunset dinner cruise, relax with a side-by-side Thai spa, or stroll through the charming streets of Phuket’s Old Town, where they have just watched their love showcased during a festival parade. For a more adventurous date, snorkeleton (or even dive in the clear waters near Coral Island or in the clear waters before the race!
