Israel is mostly under control after a massive evacuation

The country's Fire and Rescue Bureau said fires in most areas have been largely put out since most of Wednesday.

Between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, more than 150 teams have been fighting the fire that has coke about 20 square kilometers (7.7 square miles) of land in the Latren area.

At least 12 people have been treated for inhalation of smoke, but no deaths have been made, the ambulance service in Israel said. According to Israeli broadcaster Kan, 17 firefighters were injured.

Authorities say hot dry conditions have strong winds that make controlling the fire more challenging, and senior officials warned them that they can erupt again.

“I have been in service for 24 years and have experienced many fires,” said Shlomi Harush, deputy commander of the Ayalon Fire Department. “It is undoubtedly one of the toughest fires I have ever seen.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced a response to the fire, with hundreds of people evacuating the houses, but has now lifted the evacuation orders for 12 towns near Jerusalem.

Countries including France, Italy and Spain have sent planes to assist in emergency situations.

The fire caused most official events to be cancelled to celebrate Israeli Independence Day and barbecue fires nationwide – a traditional part of the day.

A major highway connecting Jerusalem and Tel Aviv has now reopened. Videos released online earlier this week showed people abandoning cars because flames and smoke were across the road.

Israeli authorities provided conflicting accounts for the cause of the fire.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog said the fires were “part of the climate crisis and must not be ignored”.

Netanyahu blamed the fire on arsonists and said 18 people were arrested, but Israeli police later said only three suspects were detained and they had nothing to do with the wildfire.
