Israeli attack killed two times when the Syrian government dealt with Druze
Overnight, Israeli air strikes on Syria killed at least two civilians as Israel said it was attacking to protect the Druze minority from government violence, a position that the Syrian Druze community itself rejected.
At least eight people were reportedly injured, after about 15 air strikes hit multiple areas at midnight on Saturday, with at least eight attacks hitting its capital, Damascus.
The Israeli military confirmed the attack on Saturday, saying its troops “attacked Syria’s military sites, air defense artillery and missile infrastructure toward the air” without providing further details or any evidence.
This is the second day of Israel's attack near the Syrian presidential palace, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he would not allow Syrian forces to deploy southern Damascus and would not tolerate “any threat to the Druze community.”
More than 100 people were killed this week in a battle between Syria's pro-government forces and Druze fighters.
Al Jazeera's Imran Khan reported a disturbing peace on Saturday in the outskirts of Jaramana where pro-government forces and Druze fighters clashed.
“A lot of people are absolutely terrified. The fighters came from multiple directions during the conflict on Tuesday, but they were beaten by security forces and then Jaramana was under a curfew for at least two days.”
He said that during that time, the Druze delegation proposed a person who would let the security council return.
Syrian government forces in Damascus and Druze Fortress in Suvada Province in the southern part of the country reached an agreement with the Druze leaders to improve security and take on some heavy weapons held by the fighters.
“Now, local forces from the Ministry of Defense will be responsible for security in the deal with Suvada here,” Khan said.
“But the armed fighters are said to be rogue elements of combat troops, who are fighting the Bashar Assad regime. This is a real problem because it is for many, like Syrians, like many, to try to destabilize the country by overcoming sectarian tensions.”
He added that Israel’s claim to protect Druze has been subject to many doubts from the Druze community.
“They said they could deal with this internally and there was no need for Israel to step up. They also pointed out the ways in which Druze was often abused in Israel and how they were destroyed houses and communities to make Israel's illegal settlements an illegal settlement. On Saturday, the United Nations Special Envoy for Syria's Geir Pedersen said he “strongly condemned Israel's continued and escalated violations of Syria's sovereignty, including multiple air strikes in Damascus and other cities.”
Despite international condemnation, the Israeli military, which continues to occupy the Golan Heights, continues to launch nationwide attacks.
“Despite the challenges, foreign threats and Israeli aircraft, we are present and nothing can stop us from protecting the people or stop us from taking responsibility for the people,” Ammar al-Hariri, commander of the Syrian Security Force, said in the town of Al-Soura al-Kura in Suwayda.

Salman Olaiwi, a resident of the town, said people felt “reassuring” when people heard about the agreement between the government and the Druze leaders.
“What is the benefit of Israel threatening us? The Israelites are theirs. For us, it is better for those close to us than those far away.”
