King Charles III visits Canada to show support for Trump's coveted country

King Charles III arrived in Canada on Monday for a symbolic visit, showing support for the country, which acknowledged him as the North American country as the 51st state in the threat of U.S. President Donald Trump.

Charles and his wife Queen Camilla landed at Ottawa Airport in Ontario, where the king met on the tarmac at Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Canadian Representative Mary Simon. The king later held a separate meeting with Carney and Simon.

Charles, 76, maintained a limited timeline while receiving cancer treatment. His two visits to Canada signaled a firm commitment to the country, one of 15 countries where he was the monarch.

Charles visited the former British colony for the first time since becoming king in September 2022.

The king accepted Carney's invitation to open Parliament on Tuesday – the British monarch performed his duties for the first time since his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth (68 years ago).

Carney invited Charles to Canada after Trump repeatedly suggested he wanted to annex the country, an idea that he was violently rebuked by the prime minister, who won an election victory last month, partly because Canadians disapprove of Trump's desire to make the U.S. state a part of the U.S. state

“The Prime Minister has made it clear that Canada is not for sale now, and never for sale,” said the Canadian envoy Ralph Goodale, when Charles visited the Canadian High Commissioner in London last week.

Goodale added: “As the head of state, the king will strengthen the power and power of this message.”

Earlier this month, Carney told Trump that at a meeting at the White House, Canada “does not sell” and “does not sell.”

Charles sent a subtle signal that in recent months, he called himself the king of Canada by wearing Canadian medals and described the country's flag as “never arousing a sense of pride and admiration.”

Now the king must engage in a tricky balancing act as British Prime Minister Keir Starmer tries to achieve good results with Trump, rather than trade and war in Ukraine.

When Starmer visited the White House in February, he sent a Charles invitation to Trump for an unprecedented second state visit to the U.S. president, who has repeatedly praised the royal family.

Carney said the gestures disturbed Canadians.
