New York City sees the least shootings, documenting historical murders: “Historical Achievements”
New York City has experienced the least number of shootings and murders, according to city officials.
From January 1 to May 31 this year, there were 264 recorded shootings and 112 recorded homicides. The previous lows were 267 shootings in 2018, with 113 homicides in 2014 and 2017.
May also saw historic lows in both categories, with 54 shootings and 18 homicides. The previous record was in 2019, when the city recorded 61 shootings and 19 homicides.
“When I took the oath as mayor, I promised to make the city safer and we will reduce crime,” Democratic mayor Eric Adams said in a statement. “Today, this number proves that we have not only kept this promise – we have exceeded that promise. I am very proud to share that shootings and homicide rates have been the lowest in New York City from January 2025 to May 2025.”

“It’s not just statistical victory—these figures represent thousands of New Yorkers who are alive today, safer, and have a better sleep at night, while communities thrived because they know that their city is not only back from the pandemic, but back,” he continued. “These historical achievements are the direct result of the government’s commitment to precise policing, strategic deployment of resources, and relentless dedication to the brave men and women of the NYPD.”
The mayor also touted that since he was sworn in, police have evacuated about 22,000 guns from the city’s streets, including ghost guns.
“Our officers also removed more than 22,000 illegal guns from our streets, including dangerous ghost guns that have no place in our community,” Adams said. “It is equally important that these results are equally important, reflecting our focus on upstream solutions and unprecedented investments in young New Yorkers because we know that crime prevention starts with providing opportunities for the next generation. But let's be clear: We are not even enough to make New Yorkers safer-they have to feel safer.”

New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch cited an executive budget hearing that reported that more than 2,200 illegal guns were taken from the street this year alone.

Earlier this year, the New York Police Department reported that the overall crime index last year was nearly 3%. Specifically, murder, robbery, burglary, big theft and motor vehicle theft cases have “a considerable decrease” throughout the city.
Last year was also the second year for crimes in the city's subway system, down 5.4%.
