Northwest bullying scandal: former football player litigation with school, former coach

A group of former Northwest footballers reportedly agreed to settle lawsuits against the school, which were allegedly deceptive and abused.

The former player agreed to make all requests for Northwest coach and former coach Pat Fitzgerald in part of the settlement, according to Bloomberg.

Fitzgerald was suspended by the Northwest in July 2023 after one of his allegedly suspected deceptions committed fraud in November 2022. The school conducted its own investigation and, although it found no evidence of this deceptiveness, Fitzgerald or his staff knew of it, it found that he had the opportunity to report bullying.

Fitzgerald's attorney Dan Webb and Matthew Carter released a statement Tuesday that focused on evidence that their client “has not committed wrongdoing.” In addition, Fitzgerald is moving forward through a lawsuit against Northwest Airlines for illegal firing.

“Fitzgerald learned yesterday that Northwestern University and some former Northwestern football players have completed a global settlement to dismiss all players’ demands for Northwestern and Fitzgerald coaches,” the attorney’s statement said through the internal zone.

“Despite extensive written and proven findings, there is no evidence or suggestion that Coach Fitzgerald is aware of any deceptiveness in the Northwest. Thus, this discovery confirms what the President of the Northwest through President Michael Schill before and after Fitzgerald’s termination: Despite any evidence, despite any evidence, there is no scope of investigation yet. Fitzgerald or any other coaching staff are aware of any suspected deception.

Fitzgerald was initially suspended for two weeks in 2023, but he issued a statement claiming he was not aware of any deceptiveness. Northwest players even issued a statement defending the coach, and Schill admitted he might have been wrong when he paused Fitzgerald.

But more and more former players have filed racism allegations, which ultimately led to Schill's complete firing of Fitzgerald.

Fitzgerald filed a wrongful firing lawsuit several months after the sack, claiming he and Schill reached a verbal agreement that he would not be subject to further punishment from the university after a two-week suspension.
