Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey was ousted Tuesday in a tough Democratic primary challenge, the son of a former city leader who has been supported by the party's “old defender” and some Republicans.
Mayor Ed Ed Gainey was seen as a progression in the race, roughly igniting the game in terms of campaign funding, but the son of the late former mayor Bob O'Connor had surpassed the incumbents before April and surpassed the incumbents – eventually fighting in a city that had not competed since the 1930s.
According to the New York Times, O'Connor has received support from some Republican donors and “old guards.”
“It's about the election in Pittsburgh, about how we get the city back on the right track. The argument about progress/not progress is ridiculous. I promise your outside groups, I promise – they haven't seen the records of one of us.”

O'Connor's campaign also expressed support for police resources and his own plans to revitalize downtown. According to the Gazette, he also gained a lot of external contributions from groups such as the Common Sense Change Action and the Victory of Democracy.
Gainey served as the first black mayor of Steel City after defeating incumbent mayor Bill Peduto in 2021. He is on the national stage of criticism of Donald Trump and his agenda, while also working to attract new businesses in Pittsburgh, including the 2026 NFL Draft, which is estimated to bring $200 million in economic growth to the region.
Gainey had previously promised not to work with Federal Ice Operations, saying Trump's budget cuts “direct attack on working families” and the economy in western Pennsylvania.
“Ice won't end the situation of failed immigration policies. What it will do is create more situations that make people feel scared and people feel unsafe.”
“Ganey needs to comply with the law and some other Democratic mayors' leadership to ensure our city is safe,” McCormick said.

Gainey's campaign highlights the mayor's efforts to increase community policing and mental health professionals to assist police responses, while O'Connor also claims to be a cape for a loved one.
Under Gainey, the city ranks number one in state population growth and adds its affordable housing by 1,600.
Gainey teamed up with Pennsylvania Democratic Governor Josh Shapiro to revitalize and improve the city’s iconic state parks.

On the Republican side, retired police stations. Tony Moreno lost to Gainey in the final cycle – against Thomas West in the Republican primary.
On the other side of the Commonwealth, George Soros-backed Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner won his main award, and in the state's third-largest city, Allentown, the progressive incumbent Matt Tuerk is facing face to face with another “old guard” Democrat of Councilman Ed Zucal.
