Pakistan's traditional ban on weddings spreads online
In Punjab, there has been no ban on investing cash at wedding parties in Pakistan, contrary to claims circulating on social media. AFP found no trace of the ban, provincial authorities confirmed the rumor Wrong.

Similar posts with the same false claims surfaced on tiktok and threads.
Some Viral Social media posts portray this tradition as overly extravagant, highlighting the case of large amounts of foreign currency and even mobile phones showering in the crowd (archived link).
But AFP found no credible reports on the formal ban on wedding traditions.
Punjab Information Minister Azma Bukhari told AFP on June 12 that the government has not banned wedding customs (archive link).
“During the wedding, no such order has been issued, prohibiting the gift of money or throwing of monetary notes,” Buhari said. “These are all baseless rumors.”
“This is fake news. No such notice was issued,” Tauseef Sabih Gondal, director of public relations at the Punjab Family Department, told AFP on June 24.
Police also notified the Ministry of Home Affairs that they have not received any instructions regarding the alleged injunction, Gundar said, adding that police have not arrested any related arrests.
A Punjab police spokesman confirmed to AFP on June 23 that “no such instructions were received.”
