Parents search for missing children after deadly floods hit Christian camps

Parents are looking for information about the whereabouts of their children, as dozens of people are still missing after a deadly, devastating river flood swept through local Christian camps. Officials say 23 to 25 girls from Mystic Camp Mystic, a private Christian camp in Hunter, Texas, are still missing.

State officials confirmed Friday night that at least 25 people died, including adults and children. Of the deaths, 24 people were reported in Kerr County, and one in Kendall County.

The family lined up in the unified center, hoping to see their relatives. According to the Kerr County Sheriff’s Office, Ingram Elementary School in Ingram, Texas and Arcadia Live Theatre in Kerrville, Texas are used as reunion centers.

According to reports, a Mystic camp with about 750 participants told parents that if they were not contacted directly, it means their children were explained.

Ellen Toranzo told Fox News Digital that her daughter, Greta Toranzo, was one of the campers missing during the flood. Carrie Hanna also confirmed to Fox News Digital that her daughter Hadley was not blamed.

Elinor Lester, 13, told the Associated Press that she was evacuated by a helicopter after wading in the flood. Leicester also said that in the catastrophic flood, the camp was completely destroyed. The channel states that Leicester was placed in the camp highlands, known as the High Mountain. Young campers can start attending at the age of 8 and live along the river bank, and are the first to flood the river, according to the Associated Press.

The National Guard responded after heavy rain Friday morning deployment in Texas, causing the Guadalupe River to rise nearly 30 feet in 45 minutes. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem later said members of the U.S. Coast Guard were deployed to assist with the evacuation.

Helicopters and military vehicles are used for evacuation. As of Friday night, 237 people have been evacuated, including 167 in helicopters.

Governor Greg Abbott's office said Texas has deployed more than 1,000 national responders and more than 800 vehicle and equipment assets. The governor also announced emergency situations in 15 counties, and his office said more people could be added to the list.

“This is a time when we as a nation need God more than ever,” Abbott said in a statement. “One thing I heard is sending prayers to those who are victimized.”

President Donald Trump told reporters Friday that the flood was “shocking” and “a terrible thing.” He also said the state will receive federal aid and his administration is working with Abbott.

The Kerr County Sheriff’s Office encourages those who have disappeared to call the Red Cross at 1-800-733-2767 for information.
