Poland begins inspections on the German border in a way that moves to each other
Authorities said Poland is commencing on-site inspections with Germany, with random inspections starting Monday, with a total of 52 crossings.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced temporary border checks in early July in response to tighter German controls on shared borders.
Like most EU countries, Germany and Poland are part of the visa-free Schengen region, which abolishes border checks between its members.
However, Germany has been conducting random inspections with the Polish border since October 2023, and in recent months, control measures have been strengthened under the Friedrich Merz administration, known for its difficult routes to immigration.
The border check in Poland begins at midnight and will initially last until August 5. During this period, Poland also intends to inspect incoming travelers on its border with Lithuania.
Border guards said they will be particularly focused on buses, minibuses and cars with many passengers as well as vehicles with tinted windows.
The announcement comes after Poland's announcement comes after the Meltz government said it will also begin reviewing asylum seekers at the Polish border, a particularly controversial issue in Poland.
According to the Ministry of the Interior, about 1,300 German officials have refused to enter the Polish border since May 8. One in ten cases involves asylum requests.
