Putin thanks Vatican for helping humanitarian affairs

Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed gratitude to the Vatican for mediation on humanitarian issues related to the Ukrainian war, the first call with Pope Leo Xiv.

The Kremlin said on Wednesday that Putin advocated deepening relations with the Holy See, which he said was based on “common spiritual and moral values.”

The Vatican later said the conversation “is particularly concerned about the situation in Ukraine and peace.”

The Pope called on Russia to make a gesture of promoting peace and stressed the importance of dialogue among the parties and seeking solutions to the conflict.

They also discussed the humanitarian situation and the need to provide assistance when needed.

According to the Kremlin statement, Putin hopes for the success of the new pope and conveys congratulations from Russian Orthodox Sheikh Kirill.

Leo clearly condemns war as an act of aggression and calls for its end. His predecessor Francis was often criticized for calling for peace without distinguishing between the aggressor and the victim.

Putin complains about Ukraine's church policy

Putin asked Catholic leaders to advocate religious freedom in Ukraine. He believes this is threatened by a ban on former Orthodox churches loyal to Moscow.

On the other hand, the Ukrainian leadership sees the church as a security risk, as many of its bishops and pastors are closely related to Moscow.
