Episode 18 Debunked: Kaifeng Maha Regional and Global, Nutrition

Nutrition, diet and health insurance advantage program ethics are a major theme in the episodes that debunked the podcast this week. Medcity news editor Arundhati Parmar joins Paul Markovich, president and CEO of Ascendiun's president and CEO (the nonprofit parent of Blue Shield, California). Samir Batra, the managing partner of Health Innovation Advocacy, is on vacation.

When he did not abandon medical research, Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert Kennedy Jr was keen on reducing food additives such as artificial flavors and colors, which is part of a government initiative to make America healthy again (MAHA).

In June, Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed a bill that requires one or more groceries containing 40 ingredients to include warning labels, in addition to nutritional education and exercise, to be taught in primary, middle and medical schools. Other states are studying similar legislation.

This begins a broader discussion on the relationship between diet, exercise and obesity. Markovich cites a Duke University study that examines “the correlation between economic development, daily energy consumption and the rise in obesity levels in a country.” The study concluded that dietary changes are the main cause of obesity in the United States and other developed countries.

Arundhati and Paul also discussed some of the highlights of Ways House and meant a joint health and oversight subcommittee hearing on the Medicare Advantage program. One problem is that providers who are not satisfied with the reimbursement rate are deleting the MA plan. However, the greater focus is on the Justice Department’s investigation of so-called MA program practices, such as sending doctors to home visits, reporting diagnostic codes, and improving risk adjustment scores without providing treatment based on these diagnoses.
