Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran has shown his speed several times in his young MLB career, but nothing is as fast as Saturday night’s match against the Cleveland Guardians.
He did what no Red Sox players did for 16 years. Actually, this is the exact same date Jacoby Ellsbury did with the New York Yankees.
Duran made a clean steal against Guardian pitcher Doug Nikhazy in a 7-3 win Saturday night in Cleveland.

Speedster danced at third base and left-handed Nikhazy really couldn't see how far Duran had gone as his back was turned to the bag.
Duran takes advantage of the base, but when he basically lands halfway, he lowers his head and starts sprinting home. Nikhazy quickly lifted his legs and drove the ball, but receiver Bo Naylor couldn't put the label down before Duran's right hand crossed the plate.
“(Third base coach Kyle Hudson) heard him telling the referee that he was working from stretching, so I decided I was going to the first court,” Duran said when asked why he was stolen home. “It's just to keep the offense moving forward and cause a little confusion. I know I have.”

“He's a perfect player under the new rules. We saw a window there and he took advantage of that.”
One of the new rules Cora mentioned here is that the receiver does not allow his body to block the plate, which allows Duran to jump into the home first.
This is not the first time Duran has tried to do this. Last season alone, he tried twice at one time, once against the Tampa Bay Rays on May 21 and the other against the Chicago White Sox on June 7.

He scored on both attempts, but they were also double steals, which meant another Red Sox player swiped second on the second swipe, allowing him to go home.
However, it was a blunt steal, when Rafael Devers, who was in the batsman's box, was jumping up and down when the plate referee called Duran Safe.
“It's really a cool game, and there's a series of cool events out there,” pitcher Walker Buehler said. “He's one of the most exciting players in baseball. After watching him from a distance, it's great to see him approaching this season.”
Even Guardian manager Stephen Vogt had to give Duran a hat, saying his third baseman Jose Ramirez noticed in Jose Ramirez that his third baseman was outside of third base to shut down Duran.
Nikhazy might take off the rubber and shoot the ball home instead of sending it out of the stretch, which he regrets in hindsight.

“He jumped big and took off immediately,” Nikaz said. “At this moment, I chose to pitch and not step on the ball. Finally, when I saw him, I should go down.”
Duran, the first All-Star game at the age of 25 last season, continued a steady start to his 2025 campaign as he led the league with nine stolen bases and three 3-pointers. So far, he cut .256/.316/.388 with 0.704 OPS in 28 games.
