Report highlights data breach risk email vulnerabilities pose for healthcare

A new report highlights emails for Achilles heels in medical cybersecurity. The Paubox report surveyed 150 healthcare IT leaders and found that 63% reported data breaches or security incidents involving emails in 2024.

Report, 60% of medical organizations fail to accept email securityhighlighting what Paubox is saying is the rupture of infrastructure at the core of the issue, exposing millions of dollars to preventable risks. Although the Paubox report notes that email is the biggest cybersecurity vulnerability in healthcare, budget allocations to address this issue usually range from 11% to 20%.

The types of email security incidents listed in the report include: phishing, password guessing and intermediate attacks, and hackers secretly inherit communications between the two parties who believe they are directly communicating with each other.

The report also provides five strategic recommendations to help hospitals improve safety.
