Tornadoes are reported in the South and Midwest in a powerful storm system

There were multiple tornadoes in the southern and midwest areas Wednesday, a powerful storm that is expected to linger in the area for several days.

Officials said Kentucky and Arkansas had multiple injuries, including a critically ill-fated child, one of whom was trapped in a collapsed warehouse in Indiana. Authorities say the tornado knocked down trees, destroyed power and damaged homes and businesses.

The National Weather Service issued a tornado watch and warning Wednesday in an area hundreds of miles from Arkansas to Illinois. More than 200,000 customers in Indiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky and Tennessee have no motivation. More than half of them are in Indiana.

According to the Weather Bureau, 18 tornadoes have been reported in Arkansas, Illinois, Kentucky and Missouri since Wednesday morning. Nine are in Missouri.

The storm system originated on the West Coast together in the week and stirred on the plains on Tuesday. But forecasters predict that thunderstorms could produce destructive winds, heavy hail and a large number of long-distance tornados in parts of Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas.

Forecasters warn that the tornado's storm system is expected to stagnate Thursday, with some parts of the southern and Midwest likely to rain 10 to 15 inches over the next five days. This prompted officials in some states to issue flood alerts.
