Schumer defends again to avoid resignation calls

Sen. Chuck Schumer, a New York Democrat and Minority Leader, has been rebelling after he has opened the way for the Republican spending bill without negotiating any major concessions.
“I'm not resigning,” he said on NBC's “Meeting Media” on Sunday. “The Republican six-month bill is definitely bad,” said Mr. Schumer of Mr. Schumer of the government's funding until September 30. However, the closing time will be 10 or 20 times worse. ”
Critics within his party say Mr. Schumer wasted the leverage provided by the bill's standoff to negotiate a bipartisan spending measure that would allow Democrats to regain some power in the Republican-controlled Congress.
Mr. Schumer defended his decision, saying the Trump administration could have played unrestricted powers during the shutdown, something he was trying to avoid.
“On day 2, they could say, 'Oh, snapshot? Feeding hungry kids? Not necessary.'” He refers to the supplemental nutrition assistance program. “On Day 4, 'Mass Transport? All Transport? Aid to the United States? Not required. We are cutting it.'”
The same argument made by Mr. Schumer to colleagues a week ago was that the shutdown would further strengthen the power of Mr. Trump and Mr. Elon Musk for their grants and demolish federal programs. But his reasons have drawn condemnation from his own party, and some even called on him to resign or encourage others to face major challenges in 2028 when facing re-election.
Senator Bernie Sanders, who is independent of Vermont, suddenly tried to end the interview with ABC after he wanted to challenge with New York New York Challenge Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Sunday. Mr. Sanders, who joined colleagues criticizing Mr. Schumer, was joined by a colleague, but reiterated that he was “the leader of the party.”
Mr. Schumer on Sunday rejected any comparison between his recent criticism facing Democrats and his outcry against President Joseph Biden, who initially refused to resign in the 2024 election.
“Look, in my core group, we have a disagreement about some people voting in one way, some people voting for another,” Schumer said. “But we both agree to respect each other because both sides see why the other feels so strong about it.
