The Israeli ambassador says Canada-Israel relations are in a “new atmosphere” – the country

Israeli Ambassador to Canada Iddo Moed said in an interview with Global News that the “initial move” of the Mark Carney administration has proposed a “new atmosphere” for Canadian-Israel relations.

“The initial actions of the current government, whether it is a measure that threatens Israel or an official summary to the ministry, are different moves. We have not heard of the past, and in this sense, this is what I call a new atmosphere,” Moed told Global News when he noted that when he discovered the difference between the current government and former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

After the Israel Defense Forces fired near the West Bank diplomatic delegation, Canada summoned the Israeli ambassador, including four Canadians.

IDF said no one was injured in the incident.

Prime Minister Mark Carney said the incident was “completely unacceptable”.

Although Moed did not disclose details of his meeting, he said it was unclear what was “unacceptable” for Carney.

“I'm not sure what is unacceptable. The diplomats approached Israeli soldiers in the combat zone, did they know that it was unacceptable? Is it unacceptable? The fact that they were walking outside an agreed and coordinated route is unacceptable to me? It is unacceptable, either.”

Carney told reporters Wednesday that the incident was one of “many things” that the region could not accept.

Maud told Global News that no one is in danger.

“We don't know what exactly happened, but the soldiers didn't know the existence of this group, they saw a group of people approaching them. So they opened some shots in the air, warning shots. There was absolutely no time, and anyone was in danger.”

He added that the IDF expressed “regret” about the incident.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said in a social media post that the situation was unacceptable, and that the Israeli ambassador to France had been called to explain it.

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said he also called on the Israeli ambassador to explain the incident in Italy.

In a joint statement issued earlier this week, Carney, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron threatened to impose “targeted sanctions” on Israel in response to its re-military offensive in Gaza and the “completely insufficient” food aid allowed to enter the enclave.

The letter also stated that leaders opposed “any attempt” to expand Israel’s settlement in the West Bank.

Carney would not say on Wednesday what “specific action” Canada will take if Israel ignores the leader's demands, but any measures are recommended to take are part of a joint response with France and the UK.
