Thousands of Israelis abroad may stay for weeks

Tens of thousands of Israelis stranded abroad may be trapped for a long time, an aviation official said Saturday.

The massive Israeli attack on Iran began a sudden fire on Friday. Tehran calls these a declaration of war, and the two sides are now exchanging attacks.

Aviation Administration Head Shmuel Zakai told Israeli broadcaster Kan that it could take several weeks for all Israelis to return home.

He said Israel will resume civil aviation gradually, cautiously and slowly as the situation allows. “It will take weeks, not days or hours.”

Kan said thousands of people were affected. Currently, there are no flights in the country.

“We are in war and we cannot announce this in advance,” the report said.

People sought shelter during a missile strike by Ramat Gan near Tel Aviv, where several cars and buildings were destroyed. The attack was part of a massive Iranian missile barrage on June 13, in retaliation for Israeli retaliation against senior Iranian military officials and strategic sites. Ilia Yefimovich/DPA
